Welcome to the Pine Barrens in Southern, NJ

The Pine Barrens is an area of land in Southern, NJ that is rich in history, folklore and has an ecologically diverse, sensitive landscape of sandy soil with tall pines, winding rivers and bogs. Believe it or not George Washington’s army sailed their tall ships up the Mullica River. Batsto was a small bustling town that forged cannon balls from the bog iron in the local waters. Have you ever heard of the Jersey Devil? Well, he lives in the Pine Barrens. The story goes that 250 years ago a woman by the name of Mrs Leeds who lived in a nearby town of Estellville became pregnant with her 13th child. When she learned of this pregnancy she became distraught and cursed the unborn child by crying out “Let it be the Devil!”. When the baby was born with cloven feet, the face of a horse and horn. It screeched loudly then flew out of the window with bat like wings. And, ever since then it is claimed that this creature roams the area causing mischief and damage as he prowls the bogs and marshes.
who knows if this is really true. Historians claim to have evidence and documentation from reliable sources of sightings and destructive activities.
In my 18 years living in the Pine Barrens, hiking and kayaking through its many trails and rivers I have yet to see this creature. I will say that the Pine Barrens do possess a truly magical and mesmerizing quality. The forest welcomes you in to explore and share in its mystery and as you reluctantly leave you will always be drawn back.003 (2)
